Once tells the story of a busker and a Czech immigrant girl who meet in the streets of Dublin. He is trying to make living with music and repairing vacuum cleaners. The girl works as a cleaner and and is taking care of her young daughter and her mother. As the guy and the girl realise they share their love for music they start to write and play songs together that tell their past and painful love stories. When their lives begin to intertwine more and more over the course of a few days their new found confidence helps them to discover what they really want in life.
This indie-movie, which is more like musical, is shot in a very low-key and simple way with hand-cameras. There are no professional actors, lighting or camera work, which in my opinion helps even more to relate to the characters and their stories. Once was the perfect movie to watch over the holidays. If you like good acoustic music and a heart-warming romantic story told far away from glossy Hollywood, grab your girlfriend/boyfriend and go and see Once. Also highly recommend is the soundtrack.
