Once tells the story of a busker and a Czech immigrant girl who meet in the streets of Dublin. He is trying to make living with music and repairing vacuum cleaners. The girl works as a cleaner and and is taking care of her young daughter and her mother. As the guy and the girl realise they share their love for music they start to write and play songs together that tell their past and painful love stories. When their lives begin to intertwine more and more over the course of a few days their new found confidence helps them to discover what they really want in life.
This indie-movie, which is more like musical, is shot in a very low-key and simple way with hand-cameras. There are no professional actors, lighting or camera work, which in my opinion helps even more to relate to the characters and their stories. Once was the perfect movie to watch over the holidays. If you like good acoustic music and a heart-warming romantic story told far away from glossy Hollywood, grab your girlfriend/boyfriend and go and see Once. Also highly recommend is the soundtrack.

And I thought Sin City looked cool. Can’t wait to see the 300.

This is a very interesting documentary on Blade Runner, which is probably one of the most influential Sci-Fi movies of all times. It features interviews with everybody involved except Harrison Ford and Sean Young of course, who hated each other’s guts during the making of the film. I found the interview with design legend Syd Mead very interesting. He was the production designer for Blade Runner. And if you still didn’t know that Deckard is a Replicant, director Ridley Scott himself tells you why.

Pixar’s latest movie Cars opened here in New Zealand two days ago. Although I haven’t seen it yet and I’m a big fan of their movies, the idea of a world full of talking cars doesn’t really work for me. Looking at the reviews so far it seems I’m not alone with this opinion.
Anyway, you should check out the first teaser trailer of the new Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and Pixar creation called Ratatouille. Looks much more promising already.
